How to Write a Good Story

I'm going to go shortly towards questions because I know that there will be many. Your characters, you clearly have got to know them so well and they're so brilliantly bought to life on the page. How do you get to know your characters, research your characters in your mind, find them? Where do they come from? You don't have to write very much every day, so long as you do it every day, to create a book I find. That's what I keep telling myself. Actually, my publisher is here.
