In the lead-up to the American Civil War, these descriptions were used as a means to justify new and more restrictive laws governing the slave population. Most experts are skeptical of these orgy stories, as it's not something you see in modern Voodoo practice. So although these articles are some of the only sources we have when it comes to 19th century Louisiana Voodoo, we shouldn't approach them like they're some form of sober reporting. These are sources that need to be handled with care.
