What Is the Public Memory of Christmas?
Christmas is this really interesting holiday. There's all kinds of tensions in cultural hegemony that sort of play out during that time. We call the work the public work of Christmas because we're understanding it as a space of public contestation, but also public collectiveness. The fact that Christmas still is a true holiday from work is something I think that many people value even those who would be highly critical of the holiday for various reasons.
