The Rise of the Purple Gang
The purple gang led by Abe Bernstein was a gang of mostly young Jewish immigrants. They filled the Detroit underworld from about 1927 to 1932. The purples named such when a business owner commented that they were rotten like the color of bad meat. Eventually, after prohibition ended, the gang's power began to wane.
