The History of Nitrous Oxide

In the US nitrous oxide was originally administered in the 1930s using concentrations again as high as 80%. It was also frequently combined with other sedating medications including opioids, barbiturates or benzos and that's a big no-no today. The typical concentration as we mentioned earlier is 50% nitrous oxide co-administered with 50% of oxygen. As a quick guide that the patient is doing well they should be able to have normal responses to verbal stimulation so this anesthetic option qualifies as minimal sedation.
