The Red House
The expression in the red means to be at a financial loss or to be in debt. A company that is in the red might be at risk of going bankrupt or, as we say colloquially, going under. The opposite of being in the red or being in debt is, of course, being profitable. If you mix red and blue, you'll get purple.
