Survey Research in China - Is There a Preference Falsification?

In authoritarian systems, people are nervous about voicing their true opinions. The idea of preference falsification is that people will say one thing in public and feel another thing in private. So when we do a survey and we see that people in an authoritarian system voice support for their government, should we believe that? Or should we chalk that up to their being scared? Is it something in between? That's the question i've been trying to unpack with my recent work.
