The founding idea of modern politics is not democracy. It's representation, Hobbes' idea that in a modern state, power is delegated. Power is handed over to a smaller group who exercise it on behalf of the larger group. But they also live under it and they live with the consequences of it. That great, ancient divide between the many and the few, monarchy and democracy isn't the central argument.
