Shear waves don't travel through liquids. That's how we know that the mantle is solid, but there are other layers within the Earth if you go even deeper. Can you see around you in your field faults on the surface? What do they look like? We can indeed. And that is one of the reasons why we're in grease. It's a fantastic place to study faults.
