Ellis: NPFL irregulars were mostly ordinary men and women who often joined the rebellion with the full encouragement of their elders. He says they wore wedding gowns, wigs, dresses, commencement gowns from high schools, and several forms of voodoo regalia. They believed that any person wearing these tallies, mons, and tattoos, and strictly adhered to the laws of not eating pumpkin, having sex, touching lime, and taking a bath, could not be killed in battle by enemy fire," Ellis writes.
