After 16 50, the proprietors of the french islands were technically the knights hospitale. But really, everyone knew that the person in control the the law in these islands was puensy. And he built a grand baroqe palace and gardens for himself called the chateau de la montagne, or castle of the mountain. He reportedly led a very lavish courtly life and tried to bring art and entertainment into the island.
