What Was a Boilermaker?

In December 1845, Peter helped build a gunboat for the country in Peru. His brothers then went into the military and fought in the US-Mexico war. And after a bit, Peter headed north. Cause California struck gold and he was gonna make his fortune in the gold. He just... I don't know how this worked out, but he got on the ship and went to Peru.
