A character's coloration of their thoughts that is coloring everything, the filter. Those words are coming from their soul, not from the writer telling it to you. If I'm hungry, a scent of food is going to send me off and is going to drive home to the reader that there's hunger. Some really great writers are able to have a character's motivations contrast to what they think their motivations are.
