CHAPTER

Derek Bell's Life and Career

Derek Bell was the first black attorney in the Civil Rights Division at the Department of Justice. After he quits the DOJ, he lands a job at the NAACP instead. In 1990, Harvard Law School fired him over its failure to hire any women of color. He also quit as the dean of the University of Oregon because they refused to extend a job offer to an Asian female candidate. "He really was a person who was driven by integrity and driven by his sense of principle," says historian Julian Zelizer.
