The crushing of Ali Pasha then touched off a revolt, which started in 1821 and spread quickly. Sultan Mahmoud basically went on a rampage against the Greek rebels. He had the Greek Orthodox patriarch in Constantinople publicly hanged in front of the palace. And so these volunteers and Greek rebels fought on until the Ottomans finally were forced to accept the independence of a new Kingdom of Greece.
