The History of the VMF 223 Marine Fighter Unit
VMF 223 was the first Marine fighter unit ashore on Guadalcanal. The pilots of 223 and their army air forces and Navy brothers usually flew every single day, every day. Their claims came at a high cost by October 9th, only nine of the original guys that flew on the island were still alive and able to fly nine aircraft.
