The main character in all modern films has to be quirky and eccentric, he says. That's very strange that the government people are never helpful,. You never want to call the police, no matter how logical in a real life situation, we'd be to call the damn police. No, we have to take it on ourselves. I have to rescue ET by myself or whatever. It doesn't serve to make you... You're consuming a fantasy of rebellion, a substitute gratification. Exactly. Lots of products. Lots of advertising campaigns are structured around that very idea that there's somehow rebellious to make you make this process. The system is actually just as strong as ever.
