Her family had to get out because they are ethnic usbeks, one of the minorities that has historically been persecuted in Afghanistan. For her and many other offgons, this was an old story. Every time the government collapsed or there was war, you had to figure out all over again where you fit into the power structure and whether you could survive. When sumaia tora heads to oxford university in england this fall she'll be making history, the first road scholar from afghanistan.
