In the Christian tradition, this whole thing is interpreted in terms of guilt and atonement. But when you interpret the angels as simply aspects of your own sentiments desire and loathing, which are keeping you out of the God,. realize that you're being kept out by your own sentiment mythology. And this is exactly what Joyce does with all these. He takes the Christian symbology, which is entirely in terms of a God who's supposed to exist and we in relationship to the God, and he rereads it in terms of these nasty principles instead of pedagogy.
