Grief & Autism - Grieving Differently

My Friend Autism

CHAPTER

How to Grieve as an Autistic Person

Autistic people have unique ways of grieving that don't fit into neurotypical norms and expectations, right? We get that. So I think it's really important to actually respect and support the individual way, the autistic person in your life grieves rather than judge them through these neurotypical standards. There's processing challenges as well. The idea that you go through loss and you grieve differently, but then the processing can also be delayed. This might be things like emotion charts, visual aids, explanations that are concrete and black and white. Things that will help you recognize and express your feelings. You're never too old for this, by the way. Don't be embarrassed.
