This election season is such an intense stress test. So Stacey, how are you feeling right now? I feel as though we are all on the edge of a precipice
Speaker 1
and we have the opportunity to walk it back. And a lot more people are ready to retreat and move back towards sanity. And so the goal is to encourage people to follow their instincts and back on up.
Speaker 2
That is Stacey Abrams, the voting rights activist, podcaster, and author. Abrams served in the Georgia House of Representatives for a decade and ran for governor twice. And I'm Brian Stelter. Let me welcome you to Inside the Hive from Vanity Fair. This week, we are going inside the swing state of Georgia with someone who understands its politics better than just about anyone. With early voting getting underway in many battlegrounds, time is of the essence. But Abrams says voter suppression is underway too, in several different ways you should know about. Abrams is also sounding an alarm about GOP efforts to sow chaos after election day. So let's get into it. You were talking about walking back from the precipice. What is the precipice? What do you see in front of us? What's the danger? Democracy. And it sounds very
Speaker 1
both esoteric and overly simplistic, but we are living in a moment where my nieces and nephews are in a generation that for the first time since reconstruction have lost civil rights. We are living in a moment where women have lost bodily autonomy in half of our country where women are dying. We have children who are forced to participate in school shooter drills and they're necessary. And so all of those things are a product of the democracy we have because the ability to influence politicians to make the right choices, the ability to hold politicians accountable has also been vitiated because we have a president who's been granted qualified immunity by the U.S. Supreme Court to take any action that he wants. All of those things are imperiled by where we are. But we have the ability to walk back. We have the ability to say we have seen what the other side looks like, what the fall looks like, and we can decide that we want to go back to the fundamentals. We want to return to the time when this country held its leadership accountable, valued its people, and granted autonomy and civil rights as a matter of course, and not as an exception.
