Mamluk Sultan's of Egypt had territory from Red Sea to Nile up to edges of Ottoman territory in Anatolia. Tensions between Mamluks and the Ottomans had been rising for a generation. Chem Sultan, Mehmet's younger brother, was 21 years old and 12 years his brother's junior. The Janissaries sick and tired of war were willing to back someone who promised a respite.
