In London, when temperatures passed 40 degrees Celsius this summer, foot traffic on the street dropped an astonishing 74%, a similar drop to pandemic restrictions. Philadelphia will be piloting smart loading zones in center city with the help of an app that holds a spot for the driver once they are within 15 minutes of the space. Heavy trucks make up 6% of vehicles on the roads, but contribute 60% of smog forming emissions and 55% of particulates through electrifying them. The American Lung Association suggests that 67,000 premature deaths could be stopped by 2050.
