The Declaration of Independence - Is the British Government Really Functioning as a Government?
In 1776, Americans realized that the British government wasn't functioning as a government. They understood themselves as political entities, not subject to parliamentary rule. So it doesn't matter what parliament said; they never had a role in this instance. And how do they prove this? They point to Ireland, a conquered country far worse off than we are in North America and they were permitted to have their own legislature.
