Lincoln is in many ways what you want to think of as America in the 19th century. He's irreligious in a world full of evangelical Christians. Even when he does develop some faith during his presidency, he's not moving in the direction of most Americans toward a personal relationship with a knowable God through Christ or anything like that. But we like to view him as representatives.
