Investigators knew nothing of a baby, or that Mae Banister had been pregnant with a fifth child. Investigators were informed that a man named Milton Trites frequently assisted the impoverished family through the Salvation Army. It appeared that this was his way of saying they had a casual, intimate relationship. In October or November of 1935, about two months before the Lake family murders, Mae suddenly told him that she would have to take Lee from work because she was pregnant with his baby and she would be leaving to give birth very soon.
