McCarthy was a demagogue of his own creation. But the displaced old guard of the Republican Party, you know, did not mind having him around at all. Hofstadter saw it as even more frightening than McCarthy because Goldwater was willing to wink and nod with a lot of this stuff. And we're very concerned about the anti-Semitism that was kind of lying in there too. Phyllis Schlafly's pamphlet from 1964, a choice not an echo is pretty scary when you look at it.
