The Origins of Merlin
The earliest references to Merlin that we have are from early Welsh poetry. Geoffrey of Monmouth, a Welsh historian who was writing in the 12th century, first incorporated Merlin into the story of King Arthur. French vernacular writers would then later combine these figures and call him Merlin.
