CHAPTER

The History of Domestic Violence

The Honeymooners had a punchline which Jackie Lisa would say to the moon Alice to the moon and it was this threat of violence that we didn't really feel all that provoked by. Farrah Fawcett made this movie The Burning Bed and we started trying to dramatize the plight of people who were suffering in their homes from people who were abusive and violent. Today even professional athletes who are highly visible and successful are at risk of losing that success having those careers disrupted if they engage in this kind of violence. It reflects a change and I think we're not there yet where we're going to have a much healthier understanding of what it takes to confront and overcome domestic violence.
