Normalize the Light Curves
Every star is proportional to the background, a variation. Ere'si here's a good example. All these curves had different brightness levels because some stars are just brighter than others from our view here on earth. So if we divide each of these light curves by their own values, like one divided by one, two divided by two, three divided by three, that's what we mean by dividing out the variability.
