And Joel exhibits that completely because he isn't in his right mind. He knows full well that he is entering this with Ellie probably coming out of it - but still has to protect her like that. There's a way that this works in the game that could not possibly work in the show. But I do think that the show did things that the game couldn't do that I also find really valuable.
