Love and the cordyceps are one and the same. It's been the whole way since the very beginning, and it drives you to do brutal things. And Joel exhibits that completely because he isn't in his right mind. He knows full well that he is entering this with Ellie probably coming out of it - but still has to protect her like that. There's a way that this works in the game that could not possibly work in the show. But I do think that the show did things that the game couldn't do that I also find really valuable.
