In the early 19 hundreds police departments and major cities in the eastern seaboard did a bit more than just provide mussel for gangsters. They also got into the business because no one else was going to do it, of a what we'd call social welfare job. So they're like, we need somebody to like, pull the homeless people off the street so they don't freeze to death. Have the cops do it. It was prohibition that finally tipped law enforcement over the edge, a like over the edge of o creators of corruption. The state had, like the federal government, had to do something about the sheer scale of corruption unleashed by a prohibition.
