The Paradox of Originality

Rousseau illustrates what a paradoxical concept originality is. He sought to live the life of a person whose nature was unique of a genius, but on the other hand his critique of modern society was a critique of the desire to distinguish yourself from other people. But I think he knew that kind of pursuit of distinction was very far from being the pursuit of genuine spontaneity.
