In 2015, 1.3 million people claimed asylum in the EU; that's been eclipsed by Ukrainians now. What was seen as so many people arriving that year prompted a kind of backlash and a rise among far right politicians. Since 2017, what's been happening there is that the EU is basically circumnavigating international law.
