The Sepsis Criteria
The prevailing theory back then was that sepsis represented an uncontrolled inflammatory response. Many rivers published his classic paper on early goal-directed therapy in 2001. One of the big things they study pushed for was early recognition of sepsis based on sepsis criteria. Despite this shortcoming, using this criteria is still sort of the industry standard, it's standard care at this point.
