There is actual a fear that physiologically speaking there is some sort of dysfunction at play and I am dying. That provokes this very real concern about my own mortality. And the same is also true with rock climbing - when you're bouldering without a rope or lead climbing the chance of hurting yourself becomes real. It would, in most instances require a true freak accident to kill yourself. But as soon as the possibility of hurting yourself actually exists, it totally changes everything. If the risk weren't real, then I don't think it would have that impact.
