I Think It's the Kind of Movie That Needs to Be Figured Out in the Right Order
I think inception for example as a movie that suffered heavily from it because it does set you up with that kind of ambiguous ending but I don't think in inception is the kind of movie that needs to be figured out. With primer there's a clear emotional arc that gets resolved at the end regardless of how you put the pieces together and so yeah I think in the end it still remains a it's a kind of niche genre. There's an audience for a movie like this but I think it's very small and even if people who did see it were not interested enough in it to really dig into it, they would have found something else to talk about after 20 years.
