Open Source in the Science Community?
When you share software in an open fashion, what you're sharing is not the literal lines of codewel. And that translates really directly to the scientific world where researchers will spend a lot of time exploring a particular topic and then publish a research paper on it. For open source to be successful, the motivations and the incentives have to be, for the most part, extrinsic. You can't rely on systems that allow people to focus on their own goals and motivations at the expense of others.
