There's a certain theatricality to all this, isn't there? Like how qot among societies like the innuit or the quacotal, times of seasonal congregation were also ritual ons. Sometimes these could involve creating temporary kings, or even ritual police with real coercive powers. In other cases, they involved dissolving norms of hiera and propriety, as in the innuit midwinter orgies. The David suggests that for much of pre history, seasonality ruled as if humans were seeing what fit playing along.
