Is There a Term for Sexual Intercourse in the Hebrew Bible?
I did not want my English version to sound as though the Bible were written yesterday, which is what all the modern translations of the committee do. So I avoided anything that sounded very modern as an idiom. There are three terms for sexual intercourse in the Bible: lie with, to know, and to come into. The come into is a little tricky because it suggests the moment of sexual penetration in English. Whereas in the Hebrew, it suggests the whole act of sex. It's even entered English legal language where we talk about carnal knowledge.
