If you accept the signatures at certain points of the block height history and you do catch up to tip quickly, IBD happens in the background slowly over time. That means that the computer that you'll need in that far future doesn't have to have an infinite disk because it's going to download only 100 years worth of blocks or whatever is reasonable then. It won't need a lot of RAM because it has this Utreix O or something like it that keeps the RAM low... And Bitcoin transactions are not that difficult to verify.
