When Yazdagurd's son Peraz was killed and his army destroyed, the White Huns weren't interested in conquering Persia. The defeat triggered internal revolt and reorganization by the Persian nobility. Kavad needed a pretext for war though, and the tight-fisted reputation of Anastasius provided it. He invaded Armenia, sacked the Byzantine border cities of Martiopolis and Theodosiopolis, and then headed straight for the city of Amida on the Tigris River.
