The Martian Qualities of Hume's Essay on Suicide

Hume's essay on suicide is in many ways the essay of Hume's that's most like Montane. It may partly, though Montane is not going to share Hume's view about suicide, have literally been inspired by some aspects of Montane's writing. One of Hume's arguments against the religious injunction, not to commit suicide as an affront to God, is that it vastly overstates not the value of human life. The place of human beings in the universe, it treats human beings as though they had this special quality in God's divine order which they don't.
