In one study researchers used GPT-3 to write propaganda about stuff like US drone strikes, the Syrian war, the US-Mexico border. And they found that even though it was less persuasive than the content written by humans, it was still highly persuasive. In another field experiment, researchers sent over 30,000 emails to more than 7,000 state legislators. Half of these emails were written by G PT-3 and half were written by students. The researchers found that a lot of the time, the legislators couldn't tell the difference between the two. They didn't know who wrote it.
