Introduction
The preface to saint athanasius' book on the incarnation is probably more well known and certainly more widely read than the text itself. Saint Athanasius was a bishop of alexandria in the fourth century. He was one of the protagonists of the nicene council where the nicene creed was developed. It's not much taken up with christ's birth, and in fact, spends a lot of time on the cross and on atonement - which is curious.
