Is There a Life in a Private Space?

The landlord's face when he opened the door was covered with blood. He put his large hands up to his bashed head and told us he'd given it an almighty wallop on the way down. When you haven't been in a private living space for a long time, it can feel abstract and overbearing. And the fewer swags and hails there are, the better. The flat was at the top of the building, so the ceiling was low, and the two front windows went more or less from floor to ceiling. There was no furniture in it, and i was pleased about that.
