Introduction

This chapter explores the social context of Zosimus Penopolis' work in alchemy, including the decline of traditional temple cults, the state of sciences and trade guilds, and the limited options for working with precious metals in ancient Egypt. The regulation of metals and unanswered questions surrounding alchemists' activities are also discussed.
