There are penalties in South Africa for those convicted of poaching, but it's not too often that someone actually gets caught. In a lot of cases, the rewards far outweigh the risks. Dozens and dozens of rangers inside Kruger have been implicated in collaboration. And it's not always because they're just looking for the money,. A lot of times they get death threats.
For years, park rangers in South Africa have tried to stop poachers who kill rhinos for their valuable horns. But it’s impossible to keep up–and rhinoceros populations have continued to fall. Bloomberg Businessweek contributor Jonathan Franklin reports that now, the rangers are taking a creative new approach to outmaneuver the poachers—and protect the animals.
