Alexander of russia had originally hoped that the very fact of this alliance would be enough to deter napoleon. But throughout 18 o four, he increasingly entertained the idea of confronting france directly with force. By early 18 o five, alexander had introduced a new round of conscription and massed an army of over a hundred sand men in the western regions of his empire. Meanwhile, bonaparte certainly did not view himself as an aggressor who needed to be deterred. This was europe and go politics at the dawn of the nineteenth century.
