The Importance of Understanding Oppositional Defiant Disorder
When a child is given a diagnosis of Oppositional Defiant Disorder, it's a psychiatric diagnosis. It comes from the DSM-5, which is sort of manual for describing different so-called disorders. What we also haven't really looked at is our cultural practices because we really normalized a lot of coercion in schools and in families. And if you're not trying to coerce somebody, it's really hard to be oppositional and defiant.
